Jimmy John's coming to Winnwood on Johnston

This may be the closest we ever get to Saints QB Drew Brees: a Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, for which Brees is a New Orleans area franchisee, is opening next to Aveda in Lafayette's Winnwood Shopping Center on Johnston Street.

Lafayette owner-operator Corey Scranton says a tentative opening date is set for Sept. 1. Established in Charleston, Ill., in 1983, the restaurant offers sub sandwiches on 8 inches of homemade French bread, fresh veggies and fine meats and cheese. The Giant Club Sandwiches have twice the meat or cheese and can be served on thick sliced seven-grain bread.

BTW, Brees' favorite sandwich is the No. 9, Italian Night Club: genoa salami, Italian capicola, smoked ham, and provolone cheese all topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo and homemade Italian vinaigrette.

Can we get him here for the opening? "That would be nice, wouldn't it," says a doubtful Scranton.
