Art can take the heat

by Anna Purdy

While Downtown Alive!, Movies in the Parc, music festivals and other events roll to a slow summer stop due to the fear of sweltering heat, ArtWalk plods on every second Saturday of the month.

June 11 marks the sixth ArtWalk of 2011. Spanning galleries, bars, restaurants and retailers throughout downtown, it allows people to stroll around taking in what Lafayette's answer to an urban center has to offer. It allows businesses to expose themselves to fresh eyes as well as artists being able to do the same and maybe make a buck.

Some highlights:

The Dupas Family has a multimedia showing at Salon NV at the end of Jefferson Street. DJ Dead Postcard will be spinning.

The Acadiana Center for the Arts has a lot going on, including two performances of a one-act play by Cody Daigle called Certain Unexplainable Events about how a single act of violence can have unexpected effects. Showings are at 6:15 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. This is on top of the several art showings AcA has for ArtWalk. Local brewery Bayou Teche will be offering beer samples.

ArtWalk technically runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. but usually starts earlier and ends later. Sometimes there are rickshaws running about that operate on donations from the riders, and one glorious night there were horse-drawn carriages taking people around! You never know what you're going to get.

Tip: Bring an umbrella. It's supposed to rain, and if it doesn't you can either use it to block the sun or look like you're about to bust into a musical number.
