Maria Placer will be inducted into the Order of Living Legends at the Acadian Museum this Sunday.

Since 1997 the museum has been honoring those who have been recognized as being an invaluable asset to our culture. On July 3 it will be Placer's turn. She was both southwest Louisiana's first female news anchor and the first female news director on the Gulf Coast. A tireless child advocate, she launched the Big Brothers-Big Sisters program here as well as the Child Find chapter and has produced more than 30 TV specials about kids in need. Placer also launched the TV segment "Wednesday's Child" on KLFY aiming to find permanent homes for kids in the foster system. She also has worked extensively with the Acadiana chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America, No. 141.

Starting at 11 a.m. with a noon induction, the event will be held at L'Eglise located on 3203 Alcee Road in Abbeville. Admission is $10 with the proceeds going to benefit the museum and it includes food, drinks, beer and entertainment by Joe D and Coulee Kenney Band. To buy tickets call 937-0012 or 233-5832, or you can send an email to [email protected].

The museum is at 203 South Broadway in Erath and is free and open weekdays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. It contains artifacts and examples of Acadian and Cajun history from the 17th century onward.
