On Saturday night the doors for Top Shelf Sports in Youngsville open at 6 p.m. at our Acadiana Roller Girls, our local roller derby team, takes on the Crescent City Wenches from, you guessed it, New Orleans.
In a nutshell, roller derby is a game where both defense and offense are played simultaneously. The two teams race on a circular track with the goal of each team's jammer to pass by the opposing team's players and scoring points. Blockers try to prevent the opposing team's jammers from passing. It can be a pretty rough sport which is part of its appeal along with the wide range in women from high schoolers to young grandmothers. Right now our girls are 6-0 and going for broke -- but not broken limbs.
There is often tailgating before a game these days. Concessions are sold at Top Shelf, including beer. Tickets are $12 at the door, $15 for VIP seating, and the purchase of any adult ticket means a child with them under 12 gets in free.
