CPC eyeing annexations

by Walter Pierce

The annexations are proposed off Butcher Switch Road near Carencro, off West Willow Street in north Lafayette, along Ambassador Caffery Parkway near its confluence with Bertrand Drive and off La Neuville Road in south Lafayette Parish.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council will consider six introductory ordinances Tuesday that would expand the corporate limits of the city of Lafayette by more than 139 acres. The annexations are proposed off Butcher Switch Road near Carencro, off West Willow Street in north Lafayette, along Ambassador Caffery Parkway near its confluence with Bertrand Drive and off La Neuville Road in south Lafayette Parish.

The latter, at nearly 85 acres and skirting the Broussard city limits, would take in the Walker's Lake and Hernandez Heights residential developments. Although annexations in south Lafayette Parish have become contentious between the cities of Lafayette and Broussard, this one likely will not since it takes in a residential area. Broussard Mayor Charles Langlinais has been aggressive in annexing potential commercial corridors to rake in sales tax revenue, which he has done over the last 20 years with wildly successful precision. But since Broussard has no residential property tax - at least not one that is enforced and collected - the city of Broussard has willingly overlooked annexing residential areas, which put a strain on services without providing revenue.
