German innovation meets Cajun tradition in this new beer, called Biere Noire (black beer). The beer is brewed to pay homage to the type of thick black coffee popular in Acadiana.

According Bayou Teche Brewing, alt-schwarzbier is a manner of brewing beer that was popular in East Germany for many years but stopped about 20 years ago. Because it was an East German method, its techniques did not reach other parts of Europe readily. Bayou Teche has brought it back, using German malts and an ale yeast for its starter and American hops paired to mimic a dry French roast. They recommend you drink LA-31 Biere Noire with grilled food especially. If you like a dark beer it would probably be good with anything.

Bayou Teche Brewing has been getting a lot of national attention lately. It has been written up in several national and international beer aficionado magazines. You can find them at 1106 Bushville Highway in Arnaudville. LA-31 Biere Noire is available in six-packs and kegs in most places beer is sold in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
