"Earth Spears" by Dutch Kepler

Facilitator of grooves and creator of colorful expressionist paintings, retired UL visual arts instructor Dutch Kepler brings his extravagant gifts to Gallery 549 for the upcoming ArtWalk, scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Saturday downtown.

A native of Missouri and instructor at UL for more than 30 years, Kepler earned an M.F.A. at Florida State University. His work has been shown in both solo and group shows at galleries across the Gulf Coast and in New York City. Kepler was also honored as a Distinguished Professor by the UL Foundation.

The genial artist is also known to those deeply in the hip around Lafayette as a skilled jazz drummer who hosts free-form jazz jams at his home north of Breaux Bridge. Kepler has also performed with Kidd Jordan, Dickie Landry, Rusty Mayne and others in clubs and galleries in Lafayette and New Orleans. One of Kepler's paintings - a 4'x2' portrait of a double bass player - hangs in the office at The Independent.

Kepler's exhibition, "Earth Spears," will be up at Gallery 549 on Jefferson Street through Nov. 2, with an opening reception during ArtWalk.
