Citing sources, ESPN is reporting that quarterback Jake Delhomme was signed Tuesday by the Houston Texans to serve as a veteran backup to rookie T.J. Yates, who was thrust into the starting position when Matt Lienart broke his collarbone Sunday in a game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Lienart became the Texans starter when Matt Schaub was lost to a season-ending foot injury.

Delhomme, a former standout QB for the Ragin' Cajuns, spent seven seasons behind center for the Carolina Panthers, leading the team to the Super Bowl following the 2003 season. He was on the Saints' squad as a backup for three seasons before that, and also spent time playing in NFL Europe and on the Saints' practice roster. Delhomme began the 2010 season as the starter for the Cleveland Browns but was replaced early on by rookie Colt McCoy.
