Jindal unveils budget

Gov. Bobby Jindal on Thursday proposed a slightly leaner budget than the current $25.6 billion the state is operating on.

Gov. Bobby Jindal on Thursday proposed a $25.5 billion state budget Thursday - a slightly leaner budget than the current $25.6 billion the state is operating on. The fiscal year begins July 1.

Details on Jindal's budget proposal are slowly coming out via the state's larger newspapers' capitol bureaus, but so far the Associate Press is reporting that the budget closes a nearly $900 million gap in higher retirement costs for state employees and includes more than 6,000 job cuts, although it's unclear if those cuts are through attrition, layoffs or a combination of both. The budget also reportedly relies on various types of one-time money to plug holes.
