House Bill 165 cuts the number of seats on the board from the current 11 down to nine by slashing the governor's appointments from three to one.
A Central Louisiana state representative has pre-filed a bill that would reduce the number of seats on the state Board of Secondary & Elementary Education specifically by limiting the number of seats appointed by the governor. House Bill 165 by Rep. Herbert Dixon, D-Alexandria, cuts the number of seats on the board from the current 11 down to nine by slashing the governor's appointments from three to one. The bill further provides that the at-large seat by jointly appointed by the governor, the speaker of the House and the Senate president. Currently law gives the governor sole discretion for the appointments pending Senate consent.
Dixon's legislation would require an amendment to the Louisiana Constitution, so two thirds of the Legislature would need to approve the bill and it would also have to be approved by a state-wide vote.
