Mitchell Silver, Chief Planning & Development Officer - Raleigh, NC - President, American Planning Associaton, led the efforts to make Raleigh, NC, one of the most dynamic communities in the modern South.

This is the eighth annual luncheon to celebrate excellence in architecture, interior design and historic preservation. Each year speakers are chosen for their vision and success in developing livable communities based on solid planning practices. As Lafayette Parish embarks on its first-ever comprehensive land use plan for the parish, this event has even more importance than ever.

Keynote speaker will be Mitchell Silver. As president of the American Planning Association (APA, Silver is leading the effort to make planning one of the most relevant professions in the 21st Century. Mitchell is also the Chief Planning & Development Officer and Planning Director for Raleigh, NC. An award-winning planner with over 27 years of experience in the public and private sectors, Mitchell is nationally recognized for his leadership in the planning profession and his contributions to contemporary planning issues.

Known by his colleagues as a creative thinker, problem-solver and visionary leader, Mitchell has been at the center of many cutting edge trends, innovative solutions and visionary plans.  As planning director in Raleigh, he has led the comprehensive plan update process to create a vibrant 21st century city with a modern transit system, great streets, great places and great neighborhoods. He is now overseeing a rewrite of the City's Development Code.

Mitchell is a contributing editor and author of ICMA's "Local Planning: Contemporary Principles and Practice," which was released in February 2009. Mr. Silver's work and commentary has been featured in Time.com, Atlantic Cities.com, the New York Times, Planning Magazine, the Triangle Business Journal, Crain's Business Journal, BBC World News and National Public Radio (NPR).

The 2012 INDesign Awards for excellence in architecture and interior design, which will be announced in The Independent on April 18, will also be presented.
