The House & Governmental Affairs committee moved forward a pair of bills that would place term limits on school boards and statewide elected officials on Wednesday, according to The Advocate.
House Bill 292 by State Rep. Stephen Pugh, R-Ponchatoula, would require school districts to hold local-option elections and decide whether to limit school board members to three four-year terms. Being local options, districts can elect at the ballot box to allow their school board members to serve indefinitely, as some currently do. Lafayette and Jefferson Parishes are exempt from the legislation as both have already imposed term limits on their school board members.
The committe also advanced a proposed constitutional amendment that would impose the same limited terms prescribed in HB 292 to statewide elected officials such as treasurer, lieutenant governor and agriculture secretary.
