Former Gov. Edwin Edwards was released from the federal detention center in Oakdale in the dark hours Thursday morning and driven two hours east to a Baton Rouge halfway house where he will spend the next few months. Edwards served more than eight years in federal custody in Texas and Louisiana following a 2000 conviction on corruption charges stemming from an FBI investigation into riverboat casino licenses. Edwards' son, Stephen, was also convicted and served time.
According to WWL radio in New Orleans, the 83-year-old former four-term governor was fetched at 4 a.m. by his daughter, Anna. Federal probation rules prohibit Edwards from speaking to the press, and Anna Edwards told a gaggle of reporters in Baton Rouge, "He's still a politician, I guess. I'm sure he'd like to [talk], but he just can't. If and when there is an appropriate time, he will."
