Last of session bills signed by Jindal

That final piece of legislation, House Bill 12, codifies the prohibition on the sale of so-called bath salts - a chemical cocktail once sold in convenience stores and head shops under names such as White Dove and Ivory Wave.

Gov. Bobby Jindal this week signed into the last of 438 bills that emanated from the 2011 legislative session. Eighteen of the bills were vetoed by the governor including, close to home, the creation of a new levee district in Vermilion Parish.

That final piece of legislation, House Bill 12, codifies the prohibition on the sale of so-called bath salts - a chemical cocktail once sold in convenience stores and head shops under names such as White Dove and Ivory Wave. The products are said to be hallucinogenic and raised the alarm of government and health officials several months ago following a spike in calls to poison hotlines by individuals said to be experiencing suicidal thoughts as a result of ingesting or smoking the products. State officials banned their sale in January. HB 12 adds the chemical compounds in the bath salts to the list of controlled dangerous substances.
