Acadiana 365’s Weekend Picks

Events taking place this weekend include the annual Acadian Orchid Society's Annual Show, a Fun Day in Girard Park and a theatre performance for young playwrights by young playwrights.

Acadian Orchid Society Show and Sale

The annual Acadian Orchid Society Show and Sale takes place this weekend to the delight of many a green thumbed locals. The show features beautiful exhibits full of exotic orchids on display. A sales area will also be available for those who wish to take a piece of this year's show home with them.

The Acadian Orchid Society Show and Sale takes place on Saturday, June 22, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Ira Nelson Horticulture Center, located at 2206 Johnston St. Admission to the event, as well as parking, is free. NAMI Fun Day

The National Alliance on Mental Illness is holding its Annual Fun Day with food, drinks, music and prizes. All members and non-members are invited to bring their friends and family. Lawn chairs are encouraged and RSVP appreciated but not necessary. The NAMI Fun Day starts Sunday, June 23, from 1-4 p.m., at Girard Park's Main Pavilion. The Whole Shebang

The Delta Grand Theatre presents the culmination of the 2013 On & Off Stage Summer Theatre Camp titled The Whole Shebang: An Evening of Plays by Young Playwrights. The Whole Shebang features six one-act plays written by participants in this year's summer theatre camp. The plays are written, directed and produced by each participant, who range in age from 10-18.

The Whole Shebang runs from June 20-21 at 6:30 p.m., at the Delta Grand Theatre, located at 120 S. Market St., in Opelousas. Tickets are $5 and are available at the door, online at www.grandtheatre.com, or by calling the theatre at 337-407-1806.

Off the Grid

Maybach Music Group's prize hip-hop contender Meek Mill will be stopping by the Cajundome as part of his Dreams Come True Tour on Saturday, June 22, at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $50 and can be purchased by visiting Cajundome.com.

Louisiana's French rock outfit Isle Dernière brings their unique South Louisiana sound, as well as their own go-go dancers, to the stage at Artmosphere on Saturday, June 22.

Vagabond Swing performs at the Feed & Seed on Saturday, June 22, starting at 9 p.m.

The Station in Broussard is holding its Rock the Storm Benefit for those in need after the devastating tornadoes that ripped through Moore, Okla. The benefit features performances from Last to Know, Logan Soileau Band, Brother Jac, Intrastasis, Tandem, Solarmind and more. Rock the Storm Benefit starts Saturday, June 22, at 7 p.m. Admission is $8 and all proceeds go to the American Red Cross.
