A 'Lafayette Institution' gets the boot

The firing of Mr. Cliff - known as the man behind the bar at Don's Downtown for more than 40 years - has prompted the creation of a Facebook group demanding his return.

The Facebook group, officially called Reinstate Mr. Cliff at Don's Downtown, was created Saturday evening by Istvan Berkeley, who writes:

Mr. Cliff is a Lafayette institution. He has worked behind the bar at Don's Downtown ... for well over 40 years (he had a couple of years out early on, to go to Vietnam). He is one of the main reasons many people go to Don's. Now it seems he has been fired. Admittedly, this is not the first time he has been let go, but each time, Don's business ... goes down, until he is re-hired. The purpose of this group is to put pressure on the management' (such as it is) at Don's to hire Mr. Cliff back. Please like this page and share it, until Mr. Cliff is back behind the bar at Don's.

The IND paid a visit Monday to Don's Downtown and asked to speak with the people responsible for Mr. Cliff's ouster. Though the owners were unavailable, the receptionist we spoke with says no employee is irreplaceable, and that there was a valid "reason" for Mr. Cliff's firing.
