NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A committee representing good government groups, science and engineering societies and academics is preparing to meet in New Orleans to discuss vacancies on a flood control board that created a political uproar this year by filing a lawsuit against 97 oil and gas companies.
The committee that meets Friday will discuss the process to be used this fall in nominating candidates for the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East. Three current members' terms have expired. A fourth has been serving but has never been confirmed by the Senate.
Gov. Bobby Jindal, who would choose from among the nominees, has harshly criticized the lawsuit against the oil industry. However, even if the nominating committee's selections are to his liking, they would still make up less than a majority of the nine-member board.
