Creatives gather for ‘first date' at AcA

by Walter Pierce

Can a gathering of musicians, dancers, actors, writers and visual artists as well as video, digital and stagecraft specialists result in new collaborations that create new work? Short answer: yes.

Artists and technicians will gather at the Acadiana Center for the Arts at 5 p.m. Wednesday (today) to put ideas flirted with during INNOV8's stART series into action at First Date, an INNOV8 stART event.

The series began on April 23 and begged the question: Can a gathering of musicians, dancers, actors, writers and visual artists as well as video, digital and stagecraft specialists result in new collaborations that create new work?

That answer is yes: A web series will be launched at the end of the summer; a social media platform for emergency preparedness and response; a jewelry designer found someone who will 3D print a prototype for a design; a theater piece based on a local author's eBook has been set into motion; a new dance piece in partnership with the artistic director of a major modern dance company will move and groove to swamp pop.

But can they move forward? Tonight, at the free and public event, they will shape up the discussions and sketch out plans to find out.
