When Lafayette Parish School Board member Greg Awbrey spoke out last week against state Rep. Nancy Landry's bill to put school board elections in line with gubernatorial elections, he made a very bizarre claim about the voters who don't cast ballots.
As far as we know, Awbrey has no expertise in electioneering, but that didn't stop him from making this comment when he addressed the Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee during last week's hearing: "Our elections aren't made up of parents. We get a completely different group of voters coming to school board elections."
Interesting.
When Awbrey ran for his District 6 seat in October 2010, more than 3,000 voters cast ballots, and though he didn't elaborate on who comprises this "different group," it's probably a safe bet that a good number of those individuals are either parents of, or have parented students within the Lafayette Parish School System. But hey, we're no expert in electioneering either, which leaves us wondering: If they're not parents, who are the close to 20,000 people who voted in the 2010 Lafayette Parish School Board elections?
