The award-winning documentary, Raised on Rice and Gravy, premieres on LPB this week. The film, co-directed by Acadiana residents Conni Castille and Allison Bohl, celebrates the almighty plate lunch and the lunch houses that serve them. “People used to come home to eat lunch with their families,” explains folklorist Conni Castille, the film’s co-director. “For farmers and laborers, it was an important daily ritual to sit down and share the midday meal at home. That’s not possible today, so neighborhood plate lunch houses have become a substitute for that in South Louisiana culture.”
The film will be broadcast on Wednesday, March 11 at 8:30 p.m. with a rebroadcast on Saturday, March 14 at 2:30 p.m.
