The District 31 lawmaker is the owner of Pelican Strategies, a Lafayette public relations firm. She sought an advisory opinion from the ethics board on Jan. 26; the board considered the matter at its Feb. 19 meeting.
Landry asked for the board's opinion on a wide range of scenarios including whether her firm could raise funds for judicial candidates, political action committees and for current office holders in the Legislature. In its response to Landry's query, the board said the Campaign Finance Disclosure Act prohibits lawmakers from accepting contributions to their own campaigns during a legislative session, but Landry's company may collect donations and raise money for other candidates and office holders. However, the board said sitting state lawmakers are barred from accepting or depositing campaign contributions while the session is in progress.
