Surrey span back in business

Detour signs diverting traffic away from the Surrey Street bridge over the Vermilion River near the airport were removed Monday morning. The bridge reopened ahead of schedule of Friday.

Works crews spent more than three weeks shoring up the approaches to the bridge and making other improvements - a project that was declared a public emergency, in part because of the condition of the bridge and also because LCG wanted to get the job done before the commencement of the 2010-2011 school year; the Lafayette Parish School System's bus depot is near the bridge and its closure during the school year would have posed a logistical problem for the LPSS's transportation department.
