The 78-year-old former city-parish councilman, state representative, broadcaster and educator died Tuesday at his home after battling throat cancer.
Former city-parish councilman, state representative, broadcaster and educator Ernie Alexander is being laid to rest Friday in St. John Cemetery. The 78-year-old died Tuesday at his home after battling throat cancer.
A native of Port Allen, Alexander began his career in Lafayette as a public school teacher before venturing into broadcasting as a longtime radio host, station owner and even weatherman for ABC affiliate KATC. He served in the state House of Representatives from 2000 to 2008, replacing former Rep. Mike Michot, who moved up to the Senate. A vocal conservative Republican, Alexander was also active in numerous civic groups in Lafayette over the decades, and for the last couple of years was a central figure in the Tea Party of Lafayette, which last fall dedicated a library in his honor.
