Nickel beer? Nope, Nik-L-Beer Friday

by Anna Purdy

Could it be the gris gris on Downtown Alive having Nik-L-Beer perform is over? The weather looks good for tonight.

Having become something like a running joke on a Scooby Doo episode, the last few times Lafayette cover band favorite Nik-L-Beer was scheduled to perform, weather prevented it, much to the consternation of Downtown Development Authority who puts on the weekly concerts. Today's weather bodes well for tonight. If not, wait for someone from Downtown Development to shake a fist at the sky and say, "And we would have gotten away with it, too, if it handn't been for you meddling weather!"

The longstanding band performs at 6 p.m. tonight at Parc International; gates open at 5:30.

Nik-L-Beer has been around since 1978. The band's popularity has grown to include Caribbean cruises where the band performs daily. The songs they perform run the gamut from zydeco to classic rock and everything in between.

Downtown Alive is a non-smoking event. You are also asked to leave pets at home. Especially if your dog smokes, but that would just be weird, anyway.

The next Downtown Alive is May 4. Gregg Martinez and the Delta Kings will perform at Parc Sans Souci.
