Officers of the Lafayette Police Department were back on the street Wednesday afternoon along St. Landry between Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center and Blackham Coliseum looking for clues in the missing person case of Mickey Shunick.
Five officers were on foot around 2:30 p.m. walking toward Coliseum Road via St. Landry and St. Landry Extended while another remained in his unit, lights flashing, to alert approaching drivers of the search in progress.
A Louisiana State Police vehicle was on the scene briefly before leaving the area.
"We were basically canvassing the roadway and near the roadway for any articles or items that may be in the area because that near the last footage that we had of Mickey," says Cpl. Paul Mouton, Public Information Officer at the LPD. "And so as a result of that - we did it already - but they wanted to go back out there again just to make sure.
"And that was what they were out there doing," he says. "It was basically a canvas."
Mouton says no new information prompted the renewed search, that it was just a matter of policy.
"After the searches at Whiskey Bay, we sat back and re-evaluated the case, as we do in all cases and we try to look at different things that maybe we need to do again, or check, or just for peace of mind, one more check of this or that," he says.
Shunick's damaged Schwinn bicycle was found submerged Sunday in the Atcafalya Basin by fisherman near the Wiskey Bay exit on Interstate 10. The rear rim was damaged and the tire dislodged; its gold handgrips were found near the bike.
Mouton believes the bike was dumped at the site and not thrown from the bridge. Forensic experts at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab are examining the bike.
Shunick, 22, went missing May 19 when she was riding her bike from a friend's house in the Saint Streets to her home in the Ambassador/Congress area.
