Celebrating the bicentennial of Louisiana's statehood, 2012 Festivals Acadiens et Créole announces a new stage that will, for the first time in the event's long history, present genres of music not limited to Cajun and Zydeco. With a poster and pin design depicting an oak tree as an icon of both the roots and growth of Cajun and Creole music over the past 200 years, this year's festival is all about paying tribute to our indigenous musicians. The Friday night opening performances that debuted last year continue with Jo-El Sonnier and Lil' Band O' Gold, and other highlights throughout the festival's 11 venues include bands showcasing the youth movement in Cajun music, staples like Geno Delafose and Wayne Toups and a few rousing band reunions. On Saturday, La Politique de la Culture will present a panel discussing the political and social importance of Louisiana's French language, music and culture as part of this year's tribute to the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana (CODOFIL) founder James Domengeaux. Take a break from dancing to check out the Bayou Food Festival, a cooking demonstration, the Louisiana Crafts Fair, new Sports Tent or jam at the Folk Roots tent. It's all free and all in your own back yard.
