To make a lining slipcover, place cut foamboard on top of two layers of interlining and draw pattern using a pencil. November 2012
Supply list:
One 3/4" wide 4x8 ft. sheet of Pink Foam Board from Home Depot (actually the home insulation board in the lumber section - it is available in 1/2" and 3/4" thickness. 3/4" allows more stability.)
Wide freezer paper, newspaper, or something wide enough to make a pattern
Tape measure
Yardstick or ruler
Masking or painters tape
Pencil
Straight pins
Knife or Jigsaw
Candle wax (if using a knife)
Two 1" plastic rings
Two large picture hangers
Lining fabric
Interlining fabric
Home décor fabric (with monogram or embroidery design, if preferred)
Scissors
Home décor cording or trim of choice
Sewing machine
1. Measure your mattress width. You will want to add 6 to 8 inches to your mattress width so that the headboard is wide enough. Divide that number in half to get your center measurement.
2. Create the pattern you want with paper of choice. Tape the pattern to the foam board and draw the design. Remove the pattern and cut the design using a knife or jigsaw. (Tip: If you lubricate your knife with wax it will cut smoothly.)
3. To make a lining slipcover, place cut foamboard on top of two layers of interlining and draw pattern using a pencil. Next, draw another guide line outside of the first, adding 3/4" for seam allowance. Repeat this step for lining. Cut along the outside guide line of both innerlining and lining. Pin two pieces of innerlining together and sew a 5/8" seam all the way around the edge, leaving the bottom open. Repeat this step for lining. Slip the innerlining over the foamboard, pull tight, turn under the bottom, pin and hand stitch across. Next, slip the lining over the innerlining and pull tight, turning under the bottom, and hand stitch across. (Tip: If your design has curves, clip the curves close to the seam line before turning the fabric right side out.)
4. Next, cut the home décor fabric. Repeat the steps in #3, adding 1" for seam allowance instead of 3/4". If adding trim to the outer edge, sew trim to the right side of one of the two pieces of cut fabric. Then sew the two together using a 5/8" seam. Turn, slip over the lining of the headboard, pull tight, turning under the bottom, pin and hand stitch across.
5. To complete the headboard, sew two plastic rings spaced evenly to the back of the headboard, and hang on the wall using large picture hangers.
(To mount the headboard to a bed frame, use a 1" x 2" piece of wood cut to size to the front sides, and a 2" piece of screen molding cut the same size to the back sides, and screw all the way through the two pieces of wood, mounting to bed frame. Adding wood braces will create more stability.)
This headboard can also be a "No Sew" project using a glue gun. Follow same steps, gluing fabric to the foam board, and adding trim, one step at a time.
