The song says "I'm in the mood for love simply because you are near me," but anyone who's sharing a bedroom knows close proximity is no aphrodisiac. Bedrooms, in many homes, have become grand central. The hub of the home - filled with electronics and enough gadgets to run a small nation right from your duvet. And while we consider it a matter of convenience, it may just be leaving little room for love in the one room where romance should rule.

"Create a space that's soothing, relaxing and spa like," says Brooks Dufrene of Gerilyn Lytal Roth Interiors. "Somewhere you aren't reminded of the everyday things."

Dufrene says it's simple: "Take the outside world out of your bedroom."

While romancing the room likely evokes thoughts of feminine additions and rose petals, the truly romantic room is less about what you're bringing in and more about what you're taking out. Paring down is the fastest (and cheapest) way to raise the romance quotient.

Create a space that is about the two of you and little else. A retreat. A spot where the noises of the world are muted and you can hear each other speak.

And for those willing to put in a little more effort, a few simple touches can do wonders without breaking the bank. There are the traditional flowers and candles, Dufrene says. But, there are also more subtle additions like sheers for windows and other window treatments that instantly add something to a bedroom.

"Window treatments soften the room," he says.

Lush pillows are another go-to for softening a room. Think less about mounds of throw pillows that have nowhere to go and focus on a few truly decadent ones. Incorporate fabrics like silk and use luxurious materials throughout the room. Aim for a space that's simple and not overly done. And look for partner-friendly touches.

"Add a chair and a half," Dufrene says, for example, instead of solo seat for reading.

It can be the perfect way to snuggle up and escape the world with enough room for two. Now, put the phone on silent and you're halfway there.
