IberiaBank Presents the 10th Annual INDesign Awards Luncheon and Lecture

Stephane Kirkland, author of Paris Reborn, to keynote

In the mid-nineteenth century, the Paris we know today was born, the vision of two extraordinary men: the endlessly ambitious Emperor Napoleon III and his unstoppable accomplice, Baron Haussman. Traditionally known as a dirty, congested, and dangerous city, Paris was transformed in an extraordinary period from 1848 to 1870, when the government launched a huge campaign to build streets, squares, parks, churches and public buildings. A very large part of what we see when we visit Paris today originates from this short span of twenty-two years.

Paris Reborn is the vivid and engrossing account of the greatest transformation of a major city in modern history. As Plan Lafayette moves into the implementation and adoption phase of the first-ever comprehensive plan for this community, Paris serves as a shining example of the enduring value of thoughtful design and planning.

The book's author Stephane Kirkland is of French and American descent. Born just outside Paris, he attended Phillips Academy Andover and studied architecture at the Ecole d'Architecture Paris-Villemin (today ENSA Paris-Malaquais). Kirkland earned a post-graduate degree in architecture history from Universite Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne, a degree in urban law and economics from the Universite Paris II Pantheon-Assas and an MBA from the Stern School of Business at New York University. His has designed schools and public spaces in the Pyrenees region of southwestern France, worked as a strategic consultant at Marakon Associates in London and Amsterdam and in mergers and acquisitions for the international energy company Centrica in London, Paris, New York and Pittsburgh. In 2012 he returned to Paris to spend his time between writing and practicing architecture.

Kirkland will be the keynote speaker for the 10th annual INDesign Awards, which celebrates excellence in architecture, interior design, historic preservation and urban planning in Lafayette and the five surrounding parishes. The deadline to submit projects is March 5.

The event is Thursday, April 24, at The Hilton Lafayette, 11:45 a.m. 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $45 per person or $395 for a reserved table for eight.
