With a new superintendent for the Lafayette Parish School System nowhere in sight, interim Superintendent Burnell LeJeune notified the board Wednesday that he’ll be retiring come summer.

LeJeune, according to this report from the Advocate, told the board Wednesday night that when he accepted the interim post in November — immediately following the board’s ouster of Pat Cooper — he was under the impression that the search for a permanent replacement would get underway early in 2015 and would be wrapped within five to six months.

That, however, hasn’t happened, with Board President Tommy Angelle saying in January that other more pressing issues, like clearing out all the central office staff with ties to Cooper, would be top priority.

The board has yet to say when it will kick of the search for a new super, but it will be interesting to see who’s interested in the post given the previous board’s poor treatment of Cooper over the last two years.

LeJeune gave the board five months to get the process underway, saying he'll retire at the end of July.
