Oil Center opens After Hours

by Wynce Nolley

The Oil Center is getting its own free outdoor concert series, similar to Downtown Alive!, Sugar Jam and Rhythms on the River, with Oil Center After Hours featuring performances from Soul Creole and Zydeco Radio.

The Oil Center is making an addition to Lafayette’s growing list of free outdoor concerts with the first Oil Center After Hours concert Wednesday, March 25, at the entirely underutilized Heymann Memorial Park.

The concert is a test run of sorts by the Oil Center Renaissance Association, which is banking on enough community support to develop Oil Center After Hours into a regular concert series in the vein of Downtown Alive! in Downtown Lafayette, Rhythms on the River (River Ranch) and Sugar Jam (Sugar Mill Pond).

“This is the pilot show for us in order to expand it to a fall and spring series,” says Chavanne Stine, president of the Oil Center Renaissance Association. “We’re trying to highlight the Oil Center and its green spaces and bring something fun for that part of the city. It’s a great opportunity while we’re in the midst of looking at future plans at the Oil Center to kind of celebrate the history and also reigniting the fire as we move forward with plans for redevelopment.”

The concert features live performances from local favorites Soul Creole and Zydeco Radio. The event will also offer charcuterie platters, which are gourmet selections of cold cut meats and cheeses, courtesy of Bread & Circus Provisions. There will also be a selection of wines sold by the bottle as well as a range of local craft brews along with several food trucks and frozen treats from Sub Zero Ice Cream. Chair rentals will also be offered during the concert so attendees won’t have to lug around their own, and free parking will be available next to the Heymann Center for easy access.

The inaugural Oil Center After Hours kicks off Wednesday, March 25, at 5:30 p.m., at Heymann Memorial Park, located at the corner of Girard Park Drive and South College Road. The family-friendly concert is free and open to the whole community.
