There's a vintage vibe to much of what’s hot for fall from caramel suede skirts with buttons or fringe to belled denim, chic little capes that remind us of the past and the return of the over-the-knee boot. Think neutral hues in rich fabrication with stand out shapes to build a wardrobe that will last with panache.

CAPE OF GOOD STYLE

Outerwear gets an uptown vibe with capes for days. From shoulder sweeping formals with attached capes to wool toppers for cold days, the cape is back in every length and fabrication. The most wearable of them all comes in an abbreviated length like this gem from Park Lane with toggle clasps.

OVER THE TOP

The most daring of boot shapes has been flirting with us for years and now the overthe-knee has arrived in full force. Pull it off with a skirt or romper that leaves enough room for some leg but stays this side of demure. Keep the heel low and look for lux leathers in neutral shades. From Shoe La La.

SUPPLE SUEDE

The softest of leathers comes this season both real and faux and nearly always in a skirt. We love this longer take on the trend from Three Little Birds. Brassy buttons and abbreviated lengths are perfect with wedged booties and snug sweaters.

FANCY FRINGE

Fringe runs the gamut from chunky suede strips to this svelte little white dress. Labor Day rules are out the window — winter whites and creams are the new color for night. Dress from Hemline. — AJH
