Barred in the bar? Smokers under siege

by R. Reese Fuller

If paying nearly $6 a pack doesn't get you to quit smoking cigarettes, Louisiana lawmakers just might. One of the last bastions of smokedom — the bar — is now under fire.

Rep. Gary Smith of Norco wants to ban smoking in bars, too, according to The Times-Picayune. It's been illegal to smoke in a Louisiana restaurant for the last three years, but Smith's House Bill 844 targets bars as well. (Don't worry about the casino though. Smith has left them out of the mix. He doesn't want to put our gambling dens at a competitive disadvantage with Mississippi's.)

State Sen. Rob Marionneaux has filed a similar Senate bill that would ban smoking in any establishment where food is served.
