Popular bakery answers sweet siren call of delicious downtown breakfast.  By Anna Purdy

Poupart's Bakery is expanding to Jefferson Street.

The current Poupart's on the corner of Pinhook and Kaliste Saloom has been kicking around since the late 1960s. The Poupart patriarch found that his French accent was a boon here in Acadiana and soon incorporated traditional fare like king cakes with his own classical French style. Today that Poupart's location offers not simply sweets but savory quiches, soups, sandwiches and more, as well as breads, jams and spices for your home.

So even though folks like me lament the old Sidebar venue in Gordon Square with its weird atrium that served to capture the echo of music like prisoners, Poupart's is opening a location known as Poupart's Bistro. Here, according to production manager Paul Hernandez, the feel of the original location will be combined with the avant guard downtown Lafayette vibe. There will be several bistro-style tables and chairs and offerings such as freshly baked danishes, croissants, biscuits and more. The hours are tentatively to be 7 a.m. to right before dinner time so patrons can nab a nosh on the way to work or grab something to go with dinner on the way home. Soups, salads and sandwiches will be available for lunch. Some of the cakes and other sweets it is famous for will make it to Jefferson Street as well. Right now this bistro will be open Monday through Friday.

Best part? The plan is to be open for Festival International April 27. That means Pamplona's delicious sangrias will be mere steps away from a Poupart's snack.
