NEW ORLEANS After a couple of self-stymied drives, UL and quarterback Blaine Gautier rallied back at the end of the first quarter and took a 6-3 lead in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Gautier had provided the big play in the drive, hitting Darryl Surgent with a 39-yad strike in front of the San Diego State bench that took it to the Aztec 38. The Cajuns hit the end zone four plays later, but Brett Baer's conversion was blocked.

End of first quarter: Cajuns 6, Aztecs 3.

Significant: Ronnie Hillman, SDSU's standout running back, has seven carries for a minus seven yards through one quarter. He entered the game as the nation's third-ranked rusher.
