This particular Artwalk has a lot going on at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, from the Student Arts Expo, The Southern Open, to the 2nd Annual Local Filmmakers Showcase.
If it's the second Saturday of the month, then it's also 2nd Saturday Artwalk, 6- 9 p.m., in downtown Lafayette.
And this particular Artwalk has a lot going on at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, from the Student Arts Expo, The Southern Open, to the 2nd Annual Local Filmmakers Showcase.
"The Student Arts Expo is going to be great because it's all around downtown," says Kate Waxely, marketing director at the AcA. "So it really brings that nice and vibrant art and culture downtown.
"We have student performances downtown, too. It's such a great way to get everyone involved in arts and culture in downtown," she says. "And you get to show off student artwork that they've been working on throughout the year."
Waxley says the Expo kicks off at 2 p.m. and Artwalk begins at 6 p.m., followed by the 2nd Annual Local Filmmakers Showcase at 8 p.m.
"It's a huge Artwalk for us. It all fell on that one day. I guess it's just springtime," Waxley says. "The great thing about the AcA is that we have the capacity to do that with the facility we have and we're able to partner with people throughout downtown. It's going to be a lot of fun."
Artwalk in the Downtown Lafayette Cultural District's galleries display works of local and regional artists. Along with the dozen galleries, museums restaurants and shops are open and present live music, food, drink and of course, art for purchase. All original art sold in the cultural district is exempt from state sales tax.
In addition, other businesses in the district show artwork, including Artmosphere, The Greenroom, The Ballet Academie, Bizarre Ink, Frederick's Hair Studio, Marc Isaac, Parish Ink, Recycled Cycles of Acadiana and Americas Coffee House.

The Southern Open, a competitive juried exhibition features artists from Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and includes all types of original media: painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and video/DVD provided by visual artists over the age of 18.

During a reception, juror Rene Barilleaux's pick of $1,000 and two $500 honorable mentions will be announced. The artist receiving the juror's pick will also receive a solo exhibition as part of the AcA Side Gallery Series in May 2013.

Arts Co-op, 535 1/2 Jefferson St. Festival show continues with Cliff Broussard, Dale Pierrottie, Jared Guidry, Bonnie Camos, Michael Istre, Kai Drobish, Camilla Drobish, Angela Riehl, Mary Attwood, Alicia Johnson, Michelle Day, Michael Van Brocklin, Michael Latiolais, Art by Mike Magic and Tanya Falgout. Singer and songwriter, Michael Istre will perform in the backyard.
Cajun Spice, 535 Jefferson St. The series "Chank A Chank" continues and is comprised of mixed media accordion art by Melissa Dronet. The mosaic stringed instruments and other mosaics, along with Hyedee Foreman's creative tiles are featured.
Cité des Arts, 109 Vine St. Cite Des Arts, the non-profit, multi-use arts facility features classes and performance space for theatre, music, dance, French Studies and independent film. The center is also used as an exhibit space during ArtWalk for visual artists featured monthly.

Lafayette Science Museum, 433 Jefferson St. Weather permitting, the planetarium will have a telescope near the Museum on Jefferson Street for safely observing the sun. When the sun sets behind buildings just before 7 p.m., the telescope will move to Venus until 8 p.m. Free.
