A consortium of public-school educators led by the Louisiana Federation of Teachers has filed a pair of state lawsuits challenging two key provisions of Gov. Bobby Jindal's sweeping overhaul of public education in the state. The Times-Picayune is reporting he suits, which include as plaintiffs some local chapters of the LFT along with four individual teachers, challenge Jindal's changes to tenure and the use of taxpayer dollars to fund the voucher program. The former suit names the state of Louisiana as the defendant; the state Board of Elementary & Secondary Education is named as the defendant in the latter.
A growing number of public school districts in Louisiana, meanwhile, are set to pool their resources and will likely file their own legal challenge against the Louisiana Scholarship Program, AKA vouchers. According to The Advocate, the Iberia Parish School Board has decided to join the suit against the voucher program, voting unanimously Wednesday night to help cover the cost of the suit.
St. Tammany Parish has already passed a similar resolution.
