Hearts of Hope, LPSO hosting free self-defense class

by Heather Miller

Education and awareness are vital to the prevention of crimes of all types.' A Hub City center for the sexually abused is teaming up with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office to offer a free self-defense class Thursday evening at the Clifton Chenier Center.

According to Hearts of Hope, a nonprofit sexual abuse support group based in Lafayette, the class is being offered in response to "the current heightened awareness for safety in our community," as the disappearance of Lafayette's Mickey Shunick continues to capture headlines - and hearts - nationwide.

The class will be taught by Sheriff's Office Capt. Craig Stansbury. It starts at 5:30 p.m. at the Clifton Chenier Center, located at 220 Willow St.
