La. Congress members oppose Farm Bill

U.S. Sens. Mary Landrieu and David Vitter voted against the Senate version, and Reps. Charles Boustany, Jeff Landry and others have expressed their concerns over the bill to members of the House Agriculture Committee, according to The Advocate. The Farm Bill passed the Senate and a House version is nearing a vote.

At issue for the Louisiana congressional delegation is the end of direct payments and price-control payments to some 2,000 rice farmers in the Bayou State. Landrieu did, however, express satisfaction to the Baton Rouge daily's D.C. correspondent over a successful effort to bat down cuts to the federal sugar program, a move that would have detrimentally impacted the state sugar industry.
