Coen & Co. take over Casa Azul

by Walter Pierce

It's a family affair this evening at the Festival of Words Cultural Arts Collective with the Coen family stepping front and center with theatrics, prose and poetry - and there's even room for you, too. As it is most Thursdays at Casa Azul in Grand Coteau, words are delivered by the guests and an open mic follows and it all begins at 7 p.m. Casa Azul is located at the only stoplight in Grand Coteau on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Cheré Coen, an award-winning journalist and multi-published author, says the evening will consist of "a mixture of short readings," that includes a short story or two and some poetry of her own as well works by her family.

And with Bruce Coen as her husband, you can expect some theater, too, that will include their son, Josh Coen. The male Coens have on deck their rendition of "Who's on First."

Bruce Coen worked in Hollywood in both film and theater, starred in and directed dozens of plays nationwide and locally, too. He directed True West that had a run at Cité des Arts and Theatre 810. Coen can be seen in an upcoming episode of HBO's Treme this fall. Like father, like son: Josh Coen is an actor and photographer currently working on a degree in fine arts photography. His latest, a photography exhibit, was at Festival International this year. Josh may perform a monologue from the one act play Zoo Story.

Cheré Coen has published several historical Cajun romances under the pen name of Cherie Claire and three non-fiction titles: Exploring Cajun Country: A Historic Guide to Acadiana, Magic's in the Bag: Creating Spellbinding Gris Gris Bags and Sachets and Cooking in Cajun Country with Karl Breaux. She teaches creative writing through UL-Lafayette's Continuing Education.? ?

Both Josh and Bruce have directed and starred in plays Cheré created for the Hub City Theatre Festival. Their next production is ZeZe Waltz, a Cajun love story, set for an October fun at Cité des Arts.? ?

Feel free to bring your own poems, songs or stories for the Open Mic that follows. This free, community event is appropriate for all ages.  ?
