A coalition of environmental advocacy groups is leveling sharp criticism at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Draft Atchafalaya Basin Master Plan, characterizing the Corps' plan as a failure to "look beyond flood control and develop a plan for the management and preservation of the water and related land resources of the Atchafalaya River Basin."
Joined by the Gulf Restoration Network, Louisiana Audubon Council, the Louisiana Environmental Action Network, Lower Mississippi Riverkeeper, the Louisiana Crawfish Producers Association-West and Delta Chapter of the Sierra Club, the group Atchafalaya Basinkeeper has posted an exhaustive critique of the Corps' plan including a dozen points of criticism that include a failure by the Corps to enforce existing environmental laws pertaining to the basin and the agency's refusal to close east-west canals that the environmental groups claims are leading to the destruction of lakes and other waterways within the basin.
