Thibodaux lawmaker tracking flow of money to cities

by Leslie Turk

Finally, we may learn just how much state money is funneled to local governments every year. Independent Thibodaux State Rep. Jerome Richard last week filed a formal request with the House Fiscal Staff, seeking information on just how much state money goes into local projects, according to Baton Rouge's Daily Report. "I want to see where the money goes," Richard told Daily Report. "I have heard it could be as much as $1 billion, though I've heard it could be less. We just really have no idea."

This could be the first time the total amount, and which cities benefit the most, is compiled in a single report.

Richard, who isn't opposed to state support of local projects, said the information will help lawmakers make informed decisions about the budget.
