Yes: roundabout

by Walter Pierce

Not the prog rock band; the awesome traffic-control structures. There may some day be as many as 50 more roundabouts scattered around Lafayette Parish. Roundabout-loving Traffic Director Tony Tramel received approval Tuesday by the City-Parish Council to take advantage of $600,000 in state funding, coupled with $100,000 tossed in by Lafayette Consolidated Government, to conduct a feasibility study on the placement of roundabouts. The structures, which have been embraced and in use in Europe and South America for decades, are a cost effective means for managing traffic at busy intersections.

Also Tuesday, the council approved a new, 5-year contract between LCG and Allied Waste for trash pick-up. The council also gave preliminary approval to increasing LCG's subsidy of the Cajundome by $50,000 annually - from the current level of $500,000.
