Chevron prints have been zig zagging their way into popularity with a bold nod to a modern aesthetic full of clean lines and sharp angles. Yet their origin is anything but recent. The chevron often seen in ancient heraldry is actually the inspiration for décor's newest darling.
"It's definitely gotten big in the last year," says Brooks Dufrene of Gerilyn Lytal Roth Interior. "It's everywhere."
Everywhere certainly includes Pinterest, where chevron reigns supreme with DIYers touting the ease of creating the parallel zigzags on everything from floors and walls to dressers and end tables with nothing more than some tape and two paint colors. "It's classic. But it's really trendy," Dufrene says.
Mixing the modern print with an otherwise traditional interior is very doable. Whether it's a large piece (think area rug) or small pop of chevron (throw pillow or tray), it works to freshen things up without much effort. "It has a big impact. You can go bold with a color and white or tone on tone," he says.
Dufrene chose a pop of it with a chevron rug in his bathroom. And he agrees with all those Pinterest folks: If you can't find a ready-made piece, go for it yourself.
"It's just straight lines. It's an easy DIY. That's a big part of why it's popular." - AB
