Anti Multi-Chem group plans push

A group in north Vermilion and south Lafayette parishes is planning a fundraising/public-awareness campaign as concerned residents seek to block Halliburton subsidiary Multi-Chem from constructing a chemical plant in their vicinity. The company has already begun construction after clearing the permit phase with the Vermilion Parish Police Jury.

Town hall meetings by Citizens Against Multi-Chem will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11 at the Judice Fire House and at the same time on Tuesday, Oct. 16 at the Abbeville Public Library. The group is also holding a raffle to raise funds for its fight against Multi-Chem. Items being raffled include a 12-gauge Benelli shotgun, an iPad, a flat screen television and other products. Call 892-6767 for info on the raffle. The prizes will be awarded at 5:30 p.m. during a 2-6 p.m. jam session on Saturday, Dec. 8 at at Touchet's Bar in Abeville.

The Multi-Chem plant under construction is a replacement plant for the one that exploded last year in Iberia Parish.
