Brandon Scott Lavergne's disturbing criminal history and self-hatred began long before the convicted killer's first arrest in 1999. By his own admission, Lavergne's "life of rage and anger" surfaced when he was just 12 years old.
The Advertiser reports that Lavergne, in a journal he kept from 2000-2008 while in prison for sexual assaulting an 18-year-old woman, admits to feeling "no respect for women" and attributes his pattern of violence to an environment of constant physical abuse that both he and his mother endured.
In letters he wrote to his ex-wife, the convicted killer of Mickey Shunick and Lisa Pate says he robbed more than 200 houses over an eight-year period beginning when he was 12 years old. By his own admission, the "wickedness" in Lavergne's heart led to many other crimes, among them physical assault, drug-dealing - and murder:
"I was a horrible person," he added, "And I did all that because I hated myself and couldn't stand to live. I just wanted to die."
Lavergne wrote of being sorry about sexually assaulting the teen, wishing he could take it back, being unable to understand why he hurt someone who was a friend and did nothing to hurt him.
"I need all the wickedness out of my heart and my life," Lavergne wrote.
In a journal he kept, Lavergne again wrote about the beatings he and his mother took, how he came to believe it was "a normal part of life."
"It began a life of rage and anger, a life with no respect for women," he wrote, adding that his temper "even scares myself."
"I long for the sting of death, an end to my pain."
