What do you get when you mix about 20 actors, a dozen writers, a couple of musicians, a zany year in politics and a lot of creative juices? Something ridiculous and profound.
Acting Up (in Acadiana), the resident theater company at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, goes full-on for one night only when it let's fly 2012: The Ridiculous & The Profound. It's a little production with a big heart in the spirit of the 24-hour play: the writers committed to devoting no more than 20 hours to their vignettes - scripts, poems, songs, rants - and the actors have had but 12 hours to rehearse the pieces, which run the gamut from earnest to snarky to whackadoodledoo. I know this because my alter ego Edison Figg contributed an original song to the production, which he will perform on banjo.
Writers include Ricky Briggs, Kelly Clayton, Dominic Cross, Jamie Marie Patrick, Clare Martin, Kim Wescott, Rebecca Woodward. The production features performances by Destin Briant, Hannah Briggs, Ricky Briggs, Sarah Mikayla Brown, Brian Crutchfield, Lian Cheramie, David Guarisco, Andrew Hunter, Jesse LaSala, Colin Miller, Heaven Moore, Ray Russo, George Saucier, Kara St. Clair, Cathy Wagnon, Cissy Whipp, Sara White as well as several Acting Up (in Acadiana) Jr. Company members. In addition to the aforementioned Mr. Figg, Danny Devillier will perform improvisational music.
