Don't believe for a second the ADAs who prosecuted Brandon Scott Lavergne bought his story on how he came to murder Mickey Shunick in the early morning hours of May 19. On Thursday, KATC obtained the Aug. 7 video of convicted killer Brandon Scott Lavergne's confession and made the decision to air some of the disturbing video. The Daily Advertiser also has a story today about Lavergne's account of the May 19 events, in which he ended the life of UL student Mickey Shunick by shooting her in the head, noting in print that the paper's website has a link to the confession (which we, thankfully, could not locate).
In the confession, Lavergne claims the entire incident started as a result of him accidently hitting Shunick on her bike, because he was distracted by his phone. If you believe this started out as an accident, I've got a bridge to sell you.
And don't think for a second the assistant district attorneys prosecuting Lavergne bought his version of events. Prosecutors got out of Lavergne a sufficient factual basis to establish that he murdered Shunick in order to send him to prison for the rest of his life, which was their primary objective, but the story they told in court is markedly different from Lavergne's account. "We think that he soft-pedaled his involvement to minimize the heinous nature of the crime," says ADA Danny Landry, who declined to be specific about just how much of Lavergne's story he doesn't buy. "Only two people know exactly what happened, and one them was murdered by Brandon Scott Lavergne."
