Dec. 21, 2012: Doomsday, or business as usual?

by Patrick Flanagan

The Mayan Calendar expires in about six weeks, and according to the Baton Rouge Advocate, one psychic is predicting significant change,' but fortunately, not the world's demise.

Twenty-twelve Doomsday predictions all boil down to Friday, Dec. 21, the day the centuries old Mayan Long Count calendar ends.

In an interview with the Advocate, here's a prediction from long-time Baton Rouge psychic Sister Eve:

Sister Eve, who has been a practicing fortune teller and psychic in Baton Rouge for more than 40 years, said there might be a kernel of truth in what the ancient Mayans may have predicted in the calendar. "My own personal belief is Dec. 21 will not be the end of the world. But there will be lots of significant changes."

When asked for specifics, she was vague: "There will be more threats to the world. More terrorist activity. Something will happen, but it won't be the end of the world."

About 10 percent of the world population actually believe the world will end come Dec. 21, according to an international poll conducted earlier this year by Reuters, in which 16,262 people in more than 20 countries were surveyed:

"Whether they think it will come to an end through the hands of God, or a natural disaster or a political event, whatever the reason, one in seven thinks the end of the world is coming," said Keren Gottfried, research manager at Ipsos Global Public Affairs which conducted the poll for Reuters. "Perhaps it is because of the media attention coming from one interpretation of the Mayan prophecy that states the world ends' in our calendar year 2012," Gottfried said, adding that some Mayan scholars have disputed the interpretation.

That belief held strongest in the United States and Turkey, where 22 percent of those surveyed believe Doomsday is coming, whereas that belief is only shared by 6 percent of the people in France and 8 percent of those living in Great Britain.
