Every December the world anxiously awaits as experts at the mother of all things color - Pantone - pick their color of the year.

Some years we scoff. Others we wonder "why why?" This year, however, we are on board. From home to haute couture, emerald green is rich, deep and the loveliest green of all.

In the words of the folks over at Pantone it is "Lively. Radiant. Lush A color of elegance and beauty that enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony."

Now we don't know about all that, but emerald green is, indeed, a gem. In fact, it could well be verging on a neutral when done properly. A great example is the little green Anya Hindmarch bag we snagged from kiki. For the fearless dresser, it's just the sort of thing we'd wear with every single thing every single day. That's the thing about emerald. It's a great contrast with most every color.

The color's ability to play well with others from pops of tangy citrus to rich wine hues makes an emerald piece like this La Mer wrap watch from Vanessa V. something that is both practical and fashion forward.

Or go totally emerald with a dress like this strapless number we snagged at Little Town. We tried it with a skinny black belt. But a bright yellow would be great for spring or a cognac could work beautifully now. That's the thing about emerald. It's rich enough for winter and bright enough for warmer temps. Wearing now and later? That's something that's always in.

But the biggest bonus of all? Emerald is flattering on every skin color. Unlike some other green varieties that can be a fright on certain skin tones, emerald works for everyone.
